Lagos recruits 1,000 LASTMA officials to tackle gridlock

The Lagos State Government says
it has recruited 1,000 new officials into the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority as part of efforts to tackle the worsening gridlock on roads within the state.

The Chief Executive Officer of LASTMA, Chris Olakpe, said the recruits would be trained, adding that LASTMA’s working hours had been extended to between 5am and 12am, especially during the Yuletide.

Olakpe, alongside the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Ladi Lawanson, reportedly spoke with correspondents on Thursday shortly after a closed-door strategic session convened and chaired by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

In attendance at the meeting were top officials of the Ministry of Transportation, Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohimi Edgal, and the Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Offences, Yinka Egbeyemi.

Lawanson  explained that the governor called the meeting to fine-tune strategies that would ensure that Lagosians were able to commute without stress.

Olakpe said the 1,000 newly-recruited LASTMA officials would be on the road before the end of the year.

He said, “Don’t forget that the governor has recruited 1,000 more LASTMA officials; so, we are going to train them and very shortly too before Christmas you will see them on the road and we intend to work from 5am to 12 midnight daily with the infusion of 1,000 men.”

On the Apapa gridlock, the LASTMA boss said the trailer park in Orile would be delivered very soon, expressing optimism that it would go a long way to address the issue of trailers parking along the roads and bridges and causing gridlock.
