Lagos pledges to improve ease of doing business

There Lagos State Government has pledged to put structures in place to enhance the ease of doing business in the state.

The Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, stated this while regretting Nigeria’s recent decline on the World Bank Ease of Doing Business ranking.

Oladunjoye, who was speaking during the Lagos Special Day at the just- concluded Lagos International Trade Fair, said the federal and state governments were working relentlessly to ensure that Nigeria moved up in the ease of doing business index.

She said, “We were surprised that Nigeria dropped one spot down the Ease of Doing Business index. Currently, the Federal Government has been looking for how to improve the situation and for us, we are going to restrategise to ensure that we contribute our own quota to take Nigeria further up the ease of doing business ladder.”

She, however, commended the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the successful hosting of the 10-day fair, saying that it had created a lot of job opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises in the state.

“The benefit of the fair to the state is huge. Lagos State has used the fair to host about 80 SMEs at no cost to them and they have made a lot of money,” she said.

She added, “We want to make sure that we create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. We will continue to provide SMEs the support because they are the engine for economic growth.”

Also speaking at the event, the President, LCCI, Mr Babatunde Ruwase, stated that the primary objective of the chamber was to promote, support or oppose legislative or other measures affecting trade, industry, commerce and agriculture as well as represent the opinion of the business community on these matters and the economy as a whole.

He stressed that in line with the LCCI’s vision and mandate, the 2018 Lagos International Trade Fair focused on connecting businesses and creating value.

“We are of the firm belief, that value is created when businesses are brought together to conduct business transaction for mutual benefit. The forces of globalisation have reinforced the need to connect businesses, link industries and integrate processes/regulations to accelerate economic growth and development.

“We have designed the 2018 Lagos International Trade Fair to create value for our exhibitors including domestic investors, foreign investors, bilateral trade agencies, conglomerates, and Ministries, Department and Agencies and state governments like Lagos State,” he added.
