Certificate saga: APP chairman asks court to disqualify Buhari from 2019 poll

The Chairman of Action Peoples Party, Mr Ikenga  Ugochinyere,  said on Thursday that he had filed a suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to disqualify President Muhammadu Buhari from participating in the 2019 presidential election over  what was described in the suit as Buhari’s “constitutional ineligibility.”

Ugochinyere is also the spokesperson for the alliance of opposition parties under the umbrella of the Coalition of United political Parties.

He said in a statement on Thursday that he also sought in his suit, an order of the court to compel the West African Examination Council to produce the certified true copy of the ledger containing all the students of the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina in Katsina State, who sat for the 1961 examination alongside Buhari.

The plaintiff had filed the suit following Buhari’s latest insistence in his forms submitted to INEC as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming 2019 polls that he was unable to present any copy of the certificates of his academic qualifications because they were with the military board.

“The plaintiff is also seeking to nullify INEC’s publication of President Buhari’s name as one of the candidates for the 2019 election because he was not educated up to the minimum requirement and did not provide any evidence  of his being educated up to at least school certificate level or its equivalent,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Ugochinyere also alleged on Thursday that there was “an ongoing move by desperate chieftains of the APC to tamper with records in WAEC and upload a computer designed result which is aimed at misleading the public in a desperate attempt to escape the disqualification of the candidate who has not met constitutional requirements to participate in the 2019 presidential election.”

He added, “The opposition spokesperson called on WAEC to preserve their age-long integrity by resisting any move to doctor the results of students who sat for the 1961 exam.

“This desperate last-minute attempt by the APC leadership is to avert the disgrace and humiliation their candidate will suffer at the ongoing lawsuit which they have no defence.”
