NSCDC probes commandants for illegal bunkering

The Commandant-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Abdullahi Muhammadu, has set up a team to investigate some state commandants for aiding pipeline vandals in the Niger Delta region.

Muhammadu, at a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday with state commandants, threatened to sanction any of them found culpable in  illegal bunkering and aiding pipeline vandals.

The CG has also dispatched a monitoring team to Rivers, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states following reports of illegal bunkering by state commandants and senior officers in the South-South region.

The corps Public Relations Officer, Emma Okeh, said in a statement that the CG read the riot act to the commandants who were summoned over allegations of engaging in illicit economic activities.

It said, “The CG, who has immediately set up a monitoring team from the headquarters to thoroughly investigate, effectively supervise and monitor activities of the state commands, warned that anyone found culpable would incur his wrath and he would not hesitate to deal decisively with such errant commandant to serve as deterrent to others.”

Following the meeting, Okeh disclosed that the CG had received the approval of the Minister of Interior to carry out a mass redeployment to reposition the organisation.

He said, “Due to recent development as it affects the corps’ mandate in the South-South and South-East regions, it has become necessary to reorganise and restrategise for operational efficiency and better service delivery.

“In view of this, Assistant Commandant-General in charge of the Civil Defence College of Peace and Disaster management, Katsina State, Dr Ahmed Audi, has been redeployed to Zone C Bauchi as the Zonal Commander.”

Others affected by the exercise included Commandants Obiageli Rachael, who was moved from Akwa Ibom State to Anambra State Command; Bello Ale from National Headquarters, Abuja, to Akwa Ibom as the new state Commandant and Dr Benito Eze, who was redeployed from Abia State to take over as the Commandant, Delta State Command.
