NAFDAC urges consumers to beware of unregistered products
The Director General of National Food And Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Christian Adeyeye has said consumers should beware of the products or brands they purchase as it may not have been registered by the agency.
She made this known while speaking on Thursday in Lagos at the 2018 Nigeria Retail/Supermarket Food Distribution & Management Workshop with the theme “Improving Retail Food Handling & Safety for Sustainable Profitability and Growth” facilitated by Bervidson Retail Group for the United States Department of Agriculture/Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA/FAS), Lagos in collaboration with National Association of Supermarket Operators of Nigeria (NASON).
Represented by Mr. Sherif Olagunju, the Director, Food Safety & Applied Nutrition, NAFDAC, she said that it is very important for brand owners or manufacturers to register their trade marks in Nigeria.
She further said “although obtaining a NAFDAC registration may seem as though it is a tedious and administratively intense process, the benefit of getting it done far overweighs the consequence of failing to comply"
At the end of his speech, he appealed to supermarket operators to always remember that importing products from abroad is not a guarantee that such products are approved by NAFDAC. To be sure, they should first make findings about the products before importing and selling them.
