Fayose seeks urgent passage of N9.9bn supplementary budget

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has presented a 2018 Revised Appropriation Bill for the sum of N9, 926,527,772.86 to the Ekiti State House of Assembly for urgent passage.

Our correspondent sighted a copy of the document signed by the outgoing governor on August 30, 2018.

It was learnt that though members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly had gone on vacation since July 16, 2018, members of the Committee on Appropriation had to reconvene to attend to the governor’s request.

The 89-page document showed that the approved estimates for 2018 stood at N98,611,545,040.66, while the revised estimates sent to the Assembly stood at N108,538,072,813.52.

The document, signed on August 30, 2018, was said to have been received at the office of the Clerk of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Monday, September 10, by 3.40pm.

The Assembly Speaker, Kola Oluwawole, in a statement, called on the members of the House Committee on Appropriation to expedite actions on the passage of the 2018 supplementary budget.

The statement, signed by Dr Samuel Omotoso, quoted the Speaker to have made the call on Monday at a meeting with the members of the House Committee on Appropriation.

When contacted for his reaction, the Special Assistant to the governor on New Media and Public Communication, Lere Olayinka, said the governor had done no wrong and urged that the lawmakers should be allowed to do their job.

Olayinka said, “It is the constitutional right of the governor to send a supplementary budget to the assembly for legislative work.

The legislators should be allowed to do their job and determine whether it followed parliamentary procedure or not. The work of the governor is distinct from that of the lawmakers.”

Olayinka also denied that the document was backdated.

“If the governor wanted the budget passed secretly, the document wouldn’t have been made public,” he said.
