Better Leadership, Better World: Women leading for the global goals

… how to increase global GDP by USD28 trillion

In 2015 the 193-member states of the United Nations all agreed to work towards achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 169 targets – to ensure global prosperity and peace. LADOL is one of several private companies committed to the SDGs. LADOL’s activities most obviously drive the achievement of Goals 8 (employment) and 9 (infrastructure development), however our company is committed to driving the attainment of all the goals – in particular Goal 5.

Goal 5 is the subject of the latest report published by the Business and Sustainable Development Commission, Better Leadership, Better World: Women Leading for the Global Goals, in which the Managing Director of LADOL, Dr. Amy Jadesimi,is featured as a prominent global female leader. The report was launch on Monday 5th March 2018, three days before International Women’s Day 2018.

As highlighted in this important report, and stated by Dr. Jadesimi in 2016 at the UN:
“Women are not simply beneficiaries of SDG Goal 5. They are also leading the achievement of all SDGs.  If the world commits to gender equality, equal engagement in the workforce adds $28 trillion US dollars to annual global GDP in 2025.”

This report is a must-read handbook for public and private sector companies, institution and individuals. The report is highlights the fact that companies that have female leaders at every level will out compete and be more profitable than companies that do not. As the economic case for gender equality is no longer in question, the report also includes examples of successful strategies that companies can use to achieve gender equality and gain the multiple benefits that this will bring. The report goes on to include examples of prominent female leaders.

Speaking on CNBC Africa Power Launch live program recently, Dr. Jadesimi said: “If you have women on your board of directors your company is going to be 42% more profitable than companies that don’t have female directors.

“Research shows that some of that benefit comes from the fact that women look at the world differently and that we more often make decisions and raise issues that lead to greater sustainability.”

Given the highly significant economic and social benefits that come with gender equality it is imperative that both the private and public sector invest in initiatives that help achieve it. This is particularly true for global growth countries like Nigeria.

The report encourages both men and women to participate and join in changing the status quo to help achieve Goal 5, which could be the key to achieving the 16 other SDGs, creating a prosperous and peaceful world by 2030.
