Expert urges DISCOs to support FG mini grids plan

A renowned renewable energy expert, Prince Timothy Adekola Okedele has advised the Electricity Distribution Company (DISCOs) to work with Federal Government  on the decision to introduce mini grids deployment as part of her strategic plan towards steady power supply in the communities for growths.

He disclosed this to BRANDINFO in an exclusive interview.

Okedele who was formerly vice chairman “Zone–D” (comprising Kwara, Niger and Sokoto state) Branch of Nigeria Custom & Immigration Staff union (since Disbanded by FG) warned and reminded DISCOs that it was created through the existing laws that can also be used to disband them if they fail to cooperate with on-going government’s restructuring efforts to revive the power sector for sustainable and  stable electricity supply and protect job security of Discos staff.

He said that Home and MSMEs across Nigeria suffers irregular power supply and the promise of reliable electricity supply by the DISCOs has been riddled with doubt, hence they need to appreciate power ministry strategic effort towards achieving a sustainable shift from the inefficient centralized energy delivery system to a diversify decentralized energy delivery system through Mini-Grid.

“Power sector supervised by Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) is been sanitized in an  unusual ways with the minister charging the relevant private investors to explore all means to satisfy the energy yearning of the teeming  consumers across the nation. An effort which will achieve nothing but efficiency for improved power that will create industrial revolution.  Fashola is a square peg in a square hole as far as the duty of pursuing power improvement for Nigeria is concerned. “He is currently exploring the necessary legal frame work and employing all disciplinary approaches to ensuring productivity in the power sector, all this actions will interest local and foreign investors, improve living standard in Nigeria and boost the GDP,” he said.

Okedele stated this on the heel of the purported disagreement between the DISCOs union and the government over mini grid development policy as proposed by Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.
