As the National Industrial Court (NIC) will resume hearing
today, Tuesday, August 15, 2017, in the matter instituted against Lagos State
Polytechnic staff unions by Lagos State Government, students of the institution
are optimistic that the strike will be called off after the court hearing.
Government has filed a motion on notice for interlocutory
injunction before his lordship, Hon. Justice Kola-Olalere of the National
Industrial Court sitting in Lagos to restrain the staff unions of Lagos State
Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) from embarking on another strike action in respect of
their demands for the payment of CONTISS 15 Migration Salary arrears.
The Claimants (State Government) had on August 3, 2017 filed
written motions ex-parte order in the suit No. NICN/LA/368/2015) which was
struck out.
The court in its ruling stated, “In the circumstance, I find
and hold that the claimants have failed to satisfy the court on the urgency of
this application. I therefore decline to grant this motion ex-parte and dismiss
same”.
The matter was adjourned to August 15, for hearing of the
motion on notice. The court in its ruling also order that the motion ex-parte,
the ruling on it and the initiating process in the matter be served on the
defendants.
Some of the students who spoke exclusively with BRANDINFO
regarding the strike expressed their dissatisfaction and hoped the school will
resume tomorrow.
Adenike Afolabi, ND 2 student of Accounting department said
that;”I believe that court ruling will favour us. We are tired of sitting at
home. We want to resume tomorrow.”
Julius Grace, HND 2 student of Business Administration
department noted that; “enough is enough! The court should the unions to
resume. There are just hindering us from writing our final exams. ”
Just last week, the national body of Academic Staff Union of
Polytechnic (ASUP) accused the LASPOTECH Rector, Mr. Samuel Sogunro of
misinforming Lagos State Government regarding the payment of salary arrears
which has led to the suspension of academic and non-academic activities in the
school.
The National Vice President of ASUP, Mr. Timothy Oluwalogbon
Ogunseye said that the national body is appalled that the Rector must have
misinform the government of Lagos state by going to court to seek an injunction
to hinder their union from resuming strike.
