Exclusive! Why LASPOTECH ASUP strike may last longer

Investigation has revealed that the on-going Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) strike in Lagos State Polytechnic may last longer then expected.

The strike started last week Thursday after the emergency congress of the union.

The Chairman of the chapter, in a statement said that the strike had nothing to do with Lagos state Governor Akinwumi Ambode, noting that it was as a result of the management’s unwillingness to honour its agreement to the lecturers.

“It should be noted, that the Union has explored all peaceful and legal avenues to ensure that the avoidable strike is averted,” said Ibitoye in a statement signed by Saheed Olatunde Jaji, the publicity secretary.”

“The Union has shown understanding enough, given supports where necessary to allow the management have a successful convocation ceremony despite the untold hardship being meted on workers by the management.”

“The union resorted into emergency congress when it was obvious that the management was not showing any iota of willingness towards the agreement, he said.”

In exclusive interview with BRANDINFO, a top executive of ASUP, LASPOTECH Chapter who does not want his name being mentioned told our correspondent that unless the school management do what the union want, academic activities may not resume in the school this year.

“We have been patience enough for the school management. We tried a lot to make sure this issue is resolved amicably but the management are not helping matters. If they failed to cooperate with us, the strike will continue even for the next one year,” he said.

He noted that Governor Akinwumi Ambode has tried his best by increasing the monthly subvention to the school, noting that the battle is between the union and the school management not the governor.

BRANDINFO ability to speak with the Public Relation Officer of the school was abortive has he did not respond to our correspondent calls and message.

It was also gathered that Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) chapter of the institution may join the strike today or Monday.
