‘Sanitation corps will enforce environmental laws’

The Lagos State Government has said it will enforce laws that will make the state achieve its goal of a cleaner and safer environment.

The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, Idowu Mohammed, said it was the duty of the agency to monitor and maintain the highways and streets across the state.

She said any breach of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law 2017 would be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

Mohammed, who stressed the risk of neglecting pedestrian bridges, said anyone who crossed the highway would be arrested.

She said, “Neglecting pedestrian bridges impedes the free flow of traffic as well as leads to unnecessary loss of lives. Hence, the distance from pedestrian bridges where arrests can be made by LAGESC officers against erring pedestrians is pegged at 200 metres.

“The agency is committed to implementing relevant laws concerning the environment, coupled with constant monitoring of Lagos environs in line with global best practices of enforcement technique, as well as ensuring that statutory punishments are meted out to offenders, which will be upheld at all times in accordance with the provision of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law 2017.”
