The Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Mathew Uroghide, has described as constitutional the inauguration of the state House of Assembly on the orders of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
He said the number of members in the chambers on the day of inauguration satisfied the provisions of the law because the nine of them represented one-third membership, which is required to form a quorum.
Uroghide, who stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Monday, also said the election of the presiding officers after the inauguration was in order.
He insisted that Obaseki had all the constitutional powers to issue a proclamation for the inauguration of the Assembly on any day and any time of the day.
The Peoples Democratic Party senator accused the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, who is challenging the action of the governor of hypocrisy.
He said, “What is happening concerning the inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly is not good enough for democracy. It borders on intolerance on the part of the actors.
“The state has a governor who duly transmitted a letter to the state House of Assembly for it to be inaugurated by the clerk. Why is it now the business of other people? It is purely a constitutional matter.
“The quorum is one-third. The nine members present adequately formed a quorum. The party in the state, working with the governor, was adequately involved just like what happened in the case of National Assembly inauguration.”
He added, “The constitution does not stipulate what time the governor should issue proclamation for the inauguration of the Assembly. It is his exclusive preserve to determine the time and date.”
