Rivers election petitions tribunal begins sitting

The election petitions tribunal in Rivers State on Wednesday began its sitting after receiving six petitions.

Our correspondent gathered that the state governorship, House of Assembly and senatorial elections attracted one petition each.

Three petitions were filed in respect of the House of Representatives’ election in the state.

The tribunal’s chairman, Justice Malami Dogondaji, at the inaugural sitting sought the cooperation of petitioners.

“We are appealing for your cooperation to enable the panel to dispense justice,” he said.

At the sitting, the tribunal heard a motion from the Accord Party seeking to serve the Peoples Democratic Party and the winner of the Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, Kingsley Chindah, its petition through substituted means.

The panel also heard the motion of the Social Democratic Party, which sought to serve the PDP as well as its candidate, Chisom Dike, the winner of Eleme/Oyigbo/Tai Federal Constituency election.

The tribunal granted both motions and adjourned till May 9.
