LASG arrests seven alleged illegal traders

The Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps said on Sunday said that they had dislodged all illegal traders on road set-backs and walkways in the Ikeja area.

The Head of Public Affairs Unit of the task force, Adebayo Taofiq, in a statement added that seven illegal traders were arrested during the exercise while goods were confiscated by the enforcement team.

The Chairman of the state task force, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, said the exercise was in line with Section 1 of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which prescribes a punishment of N90,000 or a six months’ jail term for both the buyer and the seller of goods or services on all roads across the state.

He said, “Despite continuous advocacy, enlightenment and appeals from the government, some illegal traders and hawkers were still in the habit of violating the extant environmental laws of the state by causing disorder and serious environmental infraction on roads through their activities.

“This is what is happening in locations such as Oyingbo, Bariga, Mushin, Yaba, Orile-Iganmu, Apapa, Ikorodu, Mile 12, Ojota, Ojora, Obalende and Lagos Island where activities of these illegal traders impede free flow of traffic. It will no longer be business as usual.”

Egbeyemi said the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Mu’azu, had directed that the seven arrested traders be charged to court.

In a related development, the agency served a 72-hour notice on food vendors “who are in the habit of blocking Awolowo Road opposite Airport Hotel, Ikeja, to desist from preventing residents to gain access to their homes every night.”
