Buhari meets Qatari emir, seeks investment in refineries, power, others

President Muhammadu Buhari at a meeting with the visiting Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-thani, on Tuesday, sought investment in Nigeria’s key sectors.

The meeting took place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja soon after the emir arrived at the State House.

“We invite you to invest in our refineries, pipelines, power sector, aviation, agriculture, education and many others. We need your expertise,” presidential spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, in a statement, quoted Buhari as telling the Qatari emir.

On Lake Chad, Buhari reportedly told the emir that over 15million of the 30 million lives under threat lived in Nigeria and expressed the need to recharge the lake.

“We need help with the recharge of Lake Chad as it is not a project that the concerned countries can handle alone. Recharging the lake will bring back fishing, farming, animal husbandry, and youths won’t be attracted by insurgency or illegal migration.

“We want Qatar to be involved because of the humanitarian nature of the endeavour.”

Hamad Al-thani said the visit was to reciprocate a similar one the Nigerian President paid to Qatar in 2016.

He stated, “The relationship between our countries is very good. We just have to build on it. We share a lot of similarities in different areas.

“We need to enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation. We are willing to do a lot more with Nigeria and will continue to work on investment opportunities of mutual benefit.”
