Christian leaders in Lagos State on Friday expressed concern about the killing of Christians in the North and the activities of the Fulani herdsmen in the South-West.
At a forum tagged, ‘Persecution of the church in northern Nigeria’ organised by E-Life Magazine and Christian Press Association of Nigeria, a former Attorney General of Kaduna State, Mark Jacob, said a lot of information concerning the killing of Christians in the North had been suppressed over the years.
Jacob, who claimed that no fewer than 2,000 Christians had been killed in the North in the last few years, said the South-West was also in danger following the recent activities of Fulani herdsmen in the region.
The Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Apostle Alex Bamgbola; Chairman of the state chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Sola Ore; Founder, Living Waters Unlimited Church, Lagos, Rev Ladi Thompson; Senior Pastor, City of Refuge Ministries International, Bishop Oscar Ossai, were among the clerics on the occasion.
Jacob, who released a video footage showing how Christians were allegedly being murdered in the North, called on Christians in the South to defend their northern brothers.
According to Jacob, Christians have been at the receiving end of the killings in the North.
He said, “We are interested in enlightening fellow Christians on the plight of the Christian in the North.
“When they finish with the Middle Belt, the next place is the South-West. As we have observed in the last few months, they have found their way to the South-West, it is in the public domain. “Everybody saw how Chief Olu Falae was attacked on his own farm.
“They kidnapped him and attacked his farm not once, not twice.
“They went to Ekiti State and other states in the South-West. These are signs that they testing the waters. These are the signs in the states they are trying to overrun.
“Churches will need to organise and strategise. They need to discuss how to tackle what is happening.
“When one person is touched and people show little or no concern, that is where the problem will exacerbate. But if the reverse, the rate will be stemmed.”
But the CAN chairman pointed out that many of the killings in the documentary happened over four years ago.
However, the convener of the forum and President of the Christian Press Association of Nigeria, Mr Adebola Adewara, said the discussion was influenced by the desire to show that Christians in the South, particularly in the South-West, the true picture of what was happening in the North.
