The Lagos State Government has said that plans are underway to address challenges in the transport sector caused by increased migration from other parts of the country to the state.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Ladi Lawanson, said the government was seeking ways to maximise the rapid growth of the population for the development of the sector.
Lawanson spoke at Alausa, Ikeja, during a stakeholders’ meeting on the proposed transport policy of his ministry, a statement said on Sunday,
The commissioner said the policy, when ready, would ensure the comprehensive development of the transport sector.
“Lawanson used the occasion to admonish e-commerce transport workers, who are not registered and licensed to work in Nigeria and do not pay tax to the government, to have a rethink soonest or face the wrath of the relevant laws, should they fail to cooperate with the state government in this regard.
“According to him, the state is bearing the weight of its 23 million population, with 93 per cent of them as active road users who make an average of 40 million trips daily,” the statement added.
The Dean, School of Transport at the Lagos State University, Prof. Samuel Odewunmi, in his paper, said the degree of investment in the sector would be determined by the efficacy of the policy and the proposed establishment of the Transport Advisory Committee.
Odewunmi, according to the statement, said the committee would harmonise the operation of transport workers for seamless and well-coordinated results.
He reportedly said the committee would also ensure continuous human capacity development, while updating materials needed to ensure professionalism, synergy in implementation and periodic review of the policy.
The Permanent Secretary, Dr Taiwo Salaam, appreciated the participants’ for their support and contributions towards the formulation of a robust transport policy and assured them of the ministry’s commitment towards improving the transport sector.
