The Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has said 820 buses will be released in March 2019 to mark the commencement of the Bus Reform Project in the state.
He said the initiative would redefine public transport and make the state globally competitive.
The governor, who spoke on Thursday during an inspection tour of ongoing projects across the state, noted that the project was designed to inject 5,000 buses and modern terminals into the transport sector.
While inspecting the assembling plant at Awoyaya, in the Ibeju Lekki area of the state where 500 of the 820 buses were being kept, Ambode expressed optimism that the buses would be rolled out after the elections.
“The dream is that beyond the procurement of 820 buses by the government, the next set of buses in the vision will be assembled in Lagos in this assembling plant and another one in Epe.
“The government procured these buses using its funds and the buses are owned by a government company called Lagos Bus Services Limited. So, the LBSL will lease the buses to operators, who will use the three depots at Oshodi, Anthony and Yaba to ensure that the buses are sustained and maintained properly.
“The idea is if we are able to show good example of which we have procured these buses with our own money, the private sector can join hands with us and start to buy additional buses that will make them 5,000,” the governor said.
Other projects inspected by the governor and his team are the Oshodi Transport Interchange, which is reported to be 85 per cent completed; bus depot at Oshodi, Yaba, Oyingbo, to be ready in March; International Airport Road, to be ready by early May; Oshodi-Abule Egba BRT corridor to be delivered in April.
