Ondo lawmakers want Buhari, National Assembly to intervene in crisis


Members of the Ondo State House of Assembly, led by Mr. Araoyinbo Olugbenga, on Sunday called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly to intervene in the crisis rocking the assembly.



The House had been in turmoil following the purported impeachment of the speaker and his deputy, Bamidele Oleyeloogun and Iroju Ogundeji, respectively.



Addressing journalists in Lagos on Sunday, Olugbenga, in company with the new Speaker, George, said the intervention had become necessary in order to allow the lawmakers carry out their legitimate duties.



He commended the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, for acting on the petition written by the lawmakers and subsequently ordering the arrest of the state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Mr. Jacob Adebo.



“We sincerely hope that the police will carry out the investigation thoroughly and in such a way that Adebo, who is popularly known as Idajo, and his gang of hoodlums are apprehended, prosecuted and punished, in accordance with the law, and our state will be totally free from the brigandage and terrorism which had held sway under the direction of the NURTW,” he said.



The embattled Speaker called on the National Assembly to intervene in order to allow members achieve the purpose for which they were elected.



“We have written a letter to the National Assembly to save Ondo from sinking. We are also appealing to President Muhammadu Buhari and the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, to allow the rule of law to prevail so that we can continue with our legislative duties.



“The people voted for us and they want to see us pass bills on the development of the state and their improved welfare benefits,” George said.



He disclosed that the former speaker and his deputy were impeached as a result of incompetence, gross misconduct and highhandedness.
