The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr Chris Ezike, has described as untrue a news item trending on the social media that some unnamed Chinese workers were arrested with human heads in Umuahia.
Ezike said in a statement issued in Umuahia on Thursday that the publication, which sparked public outrage, curiosity and apprehension in the state, was false.
He explained that the Abia State Police Command had confirmed that no such incident happened in the state in recent times.
The CP stated, “The publication and its linkage to Umuahia, the Abia State capital, is totally false and resides only in the figment of the imagination of the publishers.
“A close look at the composite pictures that accompanied the publication revealed a deliberate technological manipulation intended to deceive and cause panic in the state, especially during this Christmas and New Year period.
“The command wishes to reassure members of the public of our commitment, capacity and capability to protect them at all times irrespective of the handiwork of fake news peddlers.”
Ezike advised members of the public and Abia residents to ignore the publication and go about their lawful businesses.
He urged those adversely affected by the publication to ignore it and remain calm, adding that a panel had been set up to investigate the online report.
“All the persons affected by the unfortunate development are advised to be calm and to report to the panel set to further investigate the publication at the Central Police Station, Aba, for further necessary action,” he added.
