The Global Terrorism Index 2018 report has said that Nigeria lost 1,532 persons following the Boko Haram insurgency and other acts of terrorism in the country in 2017.
The report published on Wednesday added that Boko Haram terrorists are still the second most deadly globally after the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
The report is done annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace, a research institution based in Australia.
The report said the 1,532 deaths in 2017, however, represented a 16 per cent drop from 2016, noting that Nigeria had recorded some successes in the fight against Boko Haram.
GTI placed Nigeria third behind Iraq, which had 4,271 deaths from terrorism in 2017, followed by Afghanistan.
The report partly reads, “In Iraq, the total number of deaths from terrorism fell from 9,783 to 4,271 between 2016 and 2017, a 56 per cent decline. In Nigeria, the total deaths from terrorism fell to 1,532 in 2017 – a 16 per cent reduction from the previous year.
“Terrorism has fallen significantly in the epicentres of Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria, which are four of the five countries most affected by terrorism. The 10 countries with the largest improvements experienced 7, 348 fewer deaths while the 10 countries with the largest deteriorations experienced only 1, 389 terrorism deaths.
“When compared to the peak of terrorist deaths in 2014, the largest falls in the number of deaths occurred in Iraq, Nigeria and Pakistan, with falls of 6,466, 5,950 and 912 deaths respectively. This highlights the effectiveness of counter-insurgency operations undertaken in Nigeria and its neighbours – Cameroon, Niger and Chad.
“In Nigeria in 2018, there has been a dramatic increase in violence involving Fulani extremists even as deaths committed by Boko Haram are falling. In 2018 alone, deaths committed by nomadic Fulani herders are estimated to be six times greater than the number committed by Boko Haram.”
