CUPP screens six parties as 10 others endorse Atiku

Ten more political parties on Monday joined 45 other members of  the Coalition of United Political Parties to endorse the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The coalition also announced that a special committee was currently screening six other parties who had expressed their desire to join the CUPP.

During an event where the parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Abuja, the Chairman of CUPP’s steering committee and former governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, told journalists that the time had come for Nigerians to chase President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress out of government.

While demanding that Buhari should resign before he would be disgraced in next year’s election, Oyinlola faulted the Social Democratic Party which backed out of CUPP recently.

“The SDP has been part of the coalition since the beginning but decided to back out when they felt the arrangement did not favour them.

“They are like the proverbial snake which, after swallowing a rat to its tail, decided to stop, citing a flimsy excuse,” he said.

The former governor said developments in the country were clear indications that Buhari and the APC were not prepared for leadership.

The political parties that declared for CUPP on Monday included the United Patriots, Save Nigeria Congress, Reformed and Advancement Party, Alliance for Social Democrats and We the People Nigeria.

Oyinlola said the original MoU was signed among more than 40 parties with the aim of working together and rescuing Nigeria from misrule, insecurity and misery.

He said, “Since that pact was signed months ago, the coalition has grown steadily in membership. This event is a pointer that we are on the side of the people in this movement of national redemption.

“While welcoming colleagues in the named parties, we wish to reiterate that CUPP is an equal opportunity coalition as there is no seniority in CUPP.
