The Lagos State Government has presented insurance benefits worth N475m to the relatives of 189 staff members of the State Universal Basic Education Board and local governments who died on duty.
The state Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Mr Muslim Folami, said the first phase of the presentation was made in May 2018.
In a statement on Thursday, Folami described the gesture as a continuous exercise wherein an appreciable number of beneficiaries had received their money as and when due.
“I need to state that this edition is witnessing payment of benefits to 116 dependents of deceased staff members of local governments and 73 dependents of deceased SUBEB workers,” Folami said.
The commissioner urged the recipients to make judicious use of the money, adding that the money must be spent on the welfare of the deceased employees’ wives and children.
“The state governor (Akinwunmi Ambode) is passionate about the welfare of the dead and the living. So, remember the departed; don’t mismanage the money,” he said.
Folami said the Ambode administration would not hesitate to always enforce the civic rights of every member of the state’s workforce, saying the governor had the interest of everyone at heart.
Also, the Deputy Managing Director (Technical), LASACO Assurance Plc, Mr Razaq Abiodun, urged the recipients whom the deceased had chosen as next of kin to ensure the money was used for those left behind by the deceased.
