Lagos to review waste management policy

The Lagos State Government has said it will review its waste management policy, adding that existing structure has revealed deficiencies that did not align with the state’s vision.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode stated this on Monday at a programme to mark the United Nations 2018 World Habitat Day.

Ambode, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Oluranti Adebule, said effective solid waste management required a paradigm shift for environmental sustainability.

“We will go back to the drawing board to ensure the best for Lagos. In every policy, there is always room to re-evaluate,” he said.

The governor said the best methods of managing municipal solid waste were reuse, reduce and recycle.

“Every Lagosian must be part of the reusable of products in our households, as we cannot afford the one-time use and dump products given their negative consequences,” he added.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rotimi Ogunleye, who hosted the programme, said the theme, ‘Municipal solid waste management,’ reflected the realities that most mega cities in the world needed strong and virile management of waste.

He said, “Lagos State has a population of over 20 million people and it is estimated that the average individual in such mega cities as Lagos State generates an average of 0.115kg of waste daily.

“It therefore means that the state requires huge funds for domestic waste management to provide necessary facilities for operators engaged in collection and disposal of domestic waste.”

A UN delegate, Kabir Yari, said the  government must focus on solid waste management to avoid environmental hazards.

The guest speaker, Idowu Salawu, who spoke on ‘Municipal Solid Waste Management in Contemporary Nigeria: A Case Study of Lagos State,’ recommended that Lagos should go back to collection from the household level.
