Submission of entries has commenced for the 2015 / 2016 edition of
the annual Promasidor Quill Awards; and journalists across the country
can send in entries of their relevant works for any of the seven award
categories. The entries must be stories done between May 1, 2015 and
April 14, 2016.
This was made known on Thursday, January 14 at a media briefing held
at the company’s corporate office in Isolo, Lagos by the Managing
Director of Promasidor, Mr. Olivier Thiry. “This year, we have merged
the ‘best report on children’ and ‘best report on nutrition’ categories
into one. Also, a new category called ‘online reporter of the year’ has
been introduced. The new category was introduced due to the steady
rise of the new media”, he said.
Other categories open for entries are ‘education reporter of the
year’, ‘best CSR and industry reporter of the year’, ‘future writer of
the year’, ‘best photo story of the year’ and ‘brand advocate of the
year’.
Besides, the winner of the ‘best photo story of the year’ who gets a
high-end camera; other winners of the various categories would go home
with iPads and supplies of Promasidor products. Furthermore, the
overall winner of all the categories will be sent on an all-expense paid
four-week certificate course in Journalism at Thompson Foundation in
London as well as a one-week work placement in a prominent British news
organisation.
Last year’s overall winner of the award, Mr. Taiwo Alimi of The
Nation newspaper, has since attended the course. He won the grand prize
for his story ‘Where the blind dare to dream’ about Bethesda Home of
the Blind (BHB), a non-governmental facility which houses and trains 72
visually-impaired young Nigerians run by one Mrs. Chioma Ohakwe.
According to Mr. Andrew Enahoro, Promasidor’s Head, Legal / Public
Relations, that story generated public and governmental interest.
“After Alimi published that story, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu and some of her
friends visited that facility and are currently sponsoring 21 young
people from there to further their studies in the University of Lagos.
This goes to show that it is not just about doing a good story but also
one that interests people”, he said.
Enahoro also emphasized that awards for all the categories would be
based on creativity, accuracy of facts, educational value, depth of
research and analysis, quality of information and newsworthiness.
Since its inception, the Quill Awards has witnessed a steady rise in
the number of entries received – from over 100 in the first edition to
about 400 last year.
