Business School Netherlands Nigeria is set to break the mould in 2016 with its offering of an employability skills training programme as Corporate Social Responsibility offering to the Nigerian society. While business schools teach it, CSR in practice is not a common service of educational institutions who feel that education itself is a service to the community.
The target for the innovative CSR offering are fresh graduates of
the nation’s higher institutions. Research and lived experience show
that many lack core skills in writing, time management, ICT,
understanding of business and office procedures and other essential
skills that could get them a foot in the door in the complex work places
of today.
It comes under the Youth Leadership Academy, one of a tripod of CSR
schemes Business School Netherlands purports to provide in 2016.
Lere Baale, CEO, stated at a media briefing December 7, 2015, “You
will agree with me that Corporate Social Responsibility has grown in
importance worldwide. CSR is even more important in Nigeria, given the
peculiar challenges of governance in our environment. Citizens are
demanding more from the companies and institutions, operating in the
country.
Consequently, CSR is moving away from the tokenism of ‘give them
something’ to genuine corporate social investment. BSN in collaboration
with Howes Consulting Group has settled for pro-unemployed, pro-leaders
initiatives, among other outreaches. We have concluded plans to unveil
three actions as our way of giving-back.”
Education at Business School Netherlands is based on the Action
Learning paradigm. Through the paradigm, its MBA students apply their
learning in various modules in the work place, writing cases in Human
Resources Management, Operations Management, Marketing, Finance etc on
their workplaces. It is applied learning.
The Action Learning institution has proposed a tripod CRS
initiative to kick off in the first quarter of 2016. They are Youth
Leadership Academy, Leadership Legacy Awards, Support for CEOs on
succession planning.
The large number of unemployed graduates roaming the country will
find solace in the Youth Leadership Academy. The scheme would involve
training of fresh graduates in essential workplace skills to enhance
their chances of both getting jobs as well as remaining employed. BSN
Nigeria would collaborate with Howes Consulting in this scheme.
The BSN CEO, a veteran of more than 30 years in the labour market
working with multinational firm Pfizer Inc, is very passionate about the
scheme and the functional illiteracy of many of today’s graduates.
The second leg of the tripod called Leadership Legacy Awards is
meant for persons who have excelled at various vocations. The Award
will identify and recognise distinguished leaders across various sectors
who have demonstrated exemplary ethical leadership positively
accelerating growth in social, economic and political sectors in
Nigeria.
The third one seeks to tackle a major societal challenge that has
impacted negatively on Nigeria’s business sector. This is the fact of
Nigerian businesses not making it beyond the lifespan of their founders.
Still in collaboration with the consulting firm, Howes, Business
School Netherlands Nigeria would offer advisory and training on
succession planning to CEOs and executives of indigenous firms. The goal
is to try to contribute to the building of generational capacity and
firms of long-standing in the Nigerian business landscape.
BSNN announced the CSR initiatives as the icing on the cake of
significant developments in the institution. These are the attainment of
the mark of 1000-plus students enrolment as well as the introduction of
a European Doctor of Business Administration degree.
Ten candidates from Nigeria, all senior executives of major firms, have enrolled for the research-focused DBA.
Baale says the objective of the DBA for BSN in Nigeria is to secure
participation by persons who are desirous of contributing to knolwledg
production through research in business studies in the country. The
programme targets business leaders who would draw on the Action Learning
paradigm to research their institutions or others and provide rich
perspectives and insights. “Nigeria must contribute to the pool of
knowledge in business management and business studies through original
research and thinking”, Baale submits optimistically.
For busy managers, looking for a serious but flexible MBA or for a
global villager, interested in real time challenges and would want to
interact with managers from different countries, BSN ensures that this
category of students would not only gain knowledge but also advance in
their careers from the start.
Rated Number one MBA-provider in the Netherlands by Dutch
Publication Management Team, Business School Netherlands is registered
as a Private Business School within the Dutch Educational System and has
the University of Applied Sciences status without the aid of
governmental funding.
